Sexual health is a vital aspect of an individual’s overall wellness. Sex itself is a natural part of our being and serves as part of a firm foundation for love and family. Intimate relationships should bring a sense of love, security, intimacy, and cohesiveness, but oftentimes there are barriers that exist which disallow this bond to be fully achieved, or maybe it has been broken for some reason or another.
Sexual health is more than just freedom from disease, but as the American Sexual Health Association states, it “is the ability to embrace and enjoy our sexuality throughout our lives. It is an important part of our physical and emotional health”. It is “being able to experience sexual pleasure, satisfaction, and intimacy when desired, being able to communicate about sexual health with others including sexual partners and healthcare providers.
While many men and women suffer from sexual dysfunction, the causes can be multifactorial and at times complex. Regardless of this fact, it is important to take whatever steps necessary to restore this vital aspect of health and well-being in support of the loving, close, intimate relationships that we were made to have with our significant others.
