Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA), like BOTOX® (onabotulinumtoxin A), is an acetylcholine release inhibitor and a neuromuscular blocking agent indicated for the temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines. Both are a type of botulinum toxin A, but since Dysport® is a smaller molecule, it takes more unit of measure when injecting. Typical treatment areas are forehead, glabella (frown lines), lateral canthus (crow’s feet) as with BOTOX®.
What is the difference between BOTOX® and Dysport® ?
- Dysport® arrived on the scene in 2009 and is now manufactured and distributed by the company Galderma (also manufacturer of Restalyne® and Sculptra® ). BOTOX® is manufactured by Allergan.
- Dysport® contains smaller molecules of toxin and therefore it takes more “units”, or volume to achieve similar results to BOTOX®
- Dysport® typically has a quicker onset: 2-5 days as opposed to 3-7 days for BOTOX®
- Dysport® is lower priced
Does it last as long?
Yes, Dysport® typically lasts for 3-6 months
Does Dysport® work as well as BOTOX®?
Yes, both are botulinum toxin A proteins and have similar efficacy
Are the possible side effects the same?
Yes, both are botulinum toxin A proteins and have similar side effect profiles, however, Dysport® has more of an affinity for spreading to adjacent areas than does BOTOX®
